We sit in the midst of our misery. Contemplating our epic failures and miscalculations. And wonder why we are still sitting in misery. My story of commiserating with setbacks and failures has always led me to more setbacks and failures. Yeah, feeling sorry for myself felt good while I did nothing to help myself. I looked around at the people who I thought were the blame for my self-shame. And I despised them. I thought that I deserved to be them. The nice cars, the big house, and the perfect career was what I believed should have been for me, as I sat and waddled in my misery. One day I asked myself, are you the best version of Vee?
The version that is better than the world can see. The version that takes your mistakes, your laziness, your ignorance and turns them into a book of reference that you can learn from and grow from?
The version that looks at your past failures and miscalculations as steps of knowledge and growth for you to become better than you were yesterday.
The version that is not fooled by the nice cars, the big house, or the perfect career. For it knows, these things can be a disguise that hides misery.
The version that is intrigued by the question “why” and fascinated by the journey to understand the “why” with less interest in the actual “why”
The version that is a “Soft-Hard-MoFo” that understands compassion and sensitivity, yet can rise to the “F” around if you want when necessary.
The version that is unafraid to tell his brothers and sisters from different ancestors and geographies that he loves them because of who they are and what they represent.
The version that challenges itself to be better after it has won the race and all the spectators have gone home.
The version that is comfortable saying, “I’m sorry I made you feel that way, I apologize for my actions, I understand I was wrong. “ And, equally comfortable saying, “You need to apologize for your actions, I won’t let you characterize me in that light, I disagree with you and your understanding of the situation.”
The version that is content to quietly sit in misery, frustration, and pain and learn…
