Sometimes we don’t give the people in our lives who do the small seemingly insignificant things any credit. We sometimes think our herculean efforts are more significant than the smaller pivots.
My wife says, “I share too much”, but that’s who I am so I'm sharing.
Example 1
It was late Friday night, we were starting to put the house back together after having some work done. Being typical Vecus, I'm lifting and moving a bunch of heavy stuff around. Feeling strong and trying to do everything so my wife does not have to lift anything heavy. I had just moved the dryer in from the garage, which was tough, I put it back in its spot, and was trying to connect the heat exhaust hose to the back of the dryer. It was a tight awkward spot, I tried for 15 minutes and at that point was frustrated, my wife said, “Let me try, I can hang down and do it.” I rolled my eyes and said, “you’re not going to be able to get to it, it’s at a funky angle.” She slid by me, got back there with her “left-hand self” and connected the heat exhaust hose to the back of the dryer. I looked at her, shook my head, tightened the screw to secure the hose, and gave her a high five.
Example 2
Now, it was time to move the washer back in from the garage. Two things to consider, 1. There is a step from the garage floor to get into the house. 2. Washers are 50-60 pounds heavier than dryers and when you add the 75 pound connected pedestal it sits on, thats roughly 375 pounds of dead weight. I had the washer strapped to my rigged appliance dolly and was trying to pull all 375-pounds of that front-loading washer machine and its pedestal stand up the one step from the garage. I was able to get it 5 inches off the ground, but that's where I kept getting stuck. My wife asked if she could help, at first I said, “I got it”, in my mind she might hurt herself, but after trying 5 or 6 tries, I said, “ok”. As I started to pull the washer up the step, she just tapped it a little and it popped up the rest of the way. I looked at her, she smiled, and I gave her another high five.
The lesson…
Seemingly insignificant things matter. There are times when people do small things that impact our lives in a way that we might not notice and see the benefits, but more often, small things are done by others that impact our lives in a positive way that we don't take the time to consider or have a clue as to their significance in our lives. These two examples were a great reminder to me. Pay attention to the small seemingly insignificant things and thank the person or persons who made them happen.
To my wife, I appreciate you and I appreciate the things you do that I see, and the many more things you do that I have no clue of. I love you.
Have a Great Day and Stay Safe!
