A close friend of mine made a comment this week at a seminar we attended that might have sounded crazy to some of the people in attendance. He said he takes 2 hours a week which is completely his time.  In his words, that's his “selfish time”.

I was surprised by his statement.  Don't get me wrong, I agree with his statement,  I was just surprised by his number.  If you knew this man you would be overwhelmed by his calm and cool demeanor.  He has a great work ethic and is always willing to help others.  I was surprised that he only needed 2 hours of “selfish time” each week.  Let me change that,  I was impressed!

If you have followed my “public journaling” for the past 5-6 years you are aware of my position on self-care or “selfish time”.  I have “selfish time” every day.  It's part of the reason I get up at 3:00-3:30 am each morning.  During that time, there is a void that can be filled with whatever I choose to fill it with.  If I choose to read, write meditate, give back thanks and gratitude, pay some bills, plan my day, recap my yesterday, or work out, then that's what I do.  I fill those 2-3 hours a day with “Me Time”.  I'm very protective of that time and share only a small portion with a few select people when I work out.  For me, 14-21 hours a week of “selfish time” is ideal for my mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical balance.  For this young man, who is so well-balanced, to only need 2 hours per week of “selfish time” is impressive.

Regardless of the time you need, 2 hours per week or 2-3 hours per day,  make sure you create time for yourself.  Be very protective of that time.  Be selective of the individuals, if any, you allow in during that time.  Make sure you use that time to heal, grow, understand, develop, mourn, have fun, mentally rest, and most importantly keep a proper perspective on life.  Make sure it makes you a better person.

Have a great Saturday!

Stay safe!
