13 days until my next Spartan Race. This will be another out-of-town race, which covers 8-10 miles with roughly 30 obstacles. This race is the 2nd leg of my Spartan trifecta. The Spartan trifecta means a competitor completes the Sprint, the Super, and the Beast in the same calendar year. God willing, this will be my trifecta year. Some people have asked about the other OCRs I've run, how they compare, and my assessment of the various OCRs I’ve run.
Tough Mudder- A physically challenging race that embodies getting as dirty and wet as possible. The obstacles are almost impossible for the non-elite athletes to complete solo. The Tough Mudder culture breeds teamwork throughout the course. I love this race format because of the must work together nature of the course. The electric shock obstacles are the only ones that, in my opinion, have only one purpose: pain. 9/10 - because of the teambuilding aspect
Savage Race- I love me some Savage races. The courses are deceptively challenging, with an equal part wet, cold, and hard. The obstacles range from super easy to are you kidding me. A teamwork vibe is built into the course, but not as much as the Tough Mudder. I enjoy the ice bath at the beginning of each race. - The best race format for brand new OCR participants - 9/10 - super fun but challenging
Spartan Race - my first experience with OCR was a Spartan race, so I am slightly biased. All OCRs have a race village, and they are all cool, but the Spartan village is the hypest. It’s a party that makes you want to stay after the event. There is teamwork, but this race format is equally a lone wolf event. An individual can overcome every obstacle. This race format has the mud of a Tough Mudder, the wet of a Savage race, mixed with one element the other two races don't have: a penalty if you can't complete an obstacle. If you fail to complete an obstacle in all Spartan races, you must do 30 burpees or a penalty lap. I love that nothing is given or nothing is free that's built into these races. I also like the level of races: Sprint, Super, Beast, and Ultra. And I love saying, “I am Spartan” 10/10- nothing free, everything is earned.
So there you have it my assessment of the three brands of OCRs I've been a part of. Plenty of others exist, but the above three are probably the most well-recognized.
The following are my 2026 fitness goals:
1- Spartan trifecta in 1-weekend- you get a special medal
1-Sprint, 1-Super, 1- Beast
1- Climb for life in Atlanta
3 - Savage Races
1- Tough Mudder
2- Hyrox races
2- 5k races
2- Murph challenges
1- Spartan Stadium race
Let's go!
Have a great Monday!
