22 Years…

It’s hard to believe that by today's career timeline,  I would have had 3 careers.  I often wonder what I would be doing if I decided to leave after my 1st 7 years.  I had just been promoted to the position of Region Vice President and sure there were many hard, long frustrating days, but thankfully with the support and counsel of family and friends, I stayed.  As I think back to year 14, my 2nd career by today's timeline,  I had been promoted 3 more times, Area Vice President, Senior Vice President, and to my current position as an Executive Vice President.  Sure there were many times of frustration, uncertainty, and insecurity in these senior positions, and there were plenty of times when other companies tried to entice me with more compensation and more “attractive” job responsibilities and benefits.  But I stayed.  I understand that by today’s standard that might sound crazy or shortsighted, I'm sure some might have even said foolish.  I understand their perspective,  now understand mine.  Being part of a company that challenges you to be very good but understands that you are not perfect is a powerful multipler in today’s workplace.  Being part of a company that walks and supports you during personal loss is unheard of in today’s workplace.  Being part of a company that grows and gets stronger because of the growth and strength of its people is an anomaly in today’s workplace.  Sure I might have had a few more coins in my pocket,  but I would not have the professional family I have now.   I realize that many in the younger generation view being at one company for 22 years as too long and I've missed other great opportunities.  I counter that by saying being at this company for 22 years has allowed me to help others realize a great opportunity here.

I'm thankful for the support of my family and friends through the highs and lows of my career and I'm thankful for being part of a company that has allowed me to grow and become a better version of myself personally and professionally.  Cheers to the future!
