Vee’s Inspiration March 19, 2024
I had the pleasure of spending time with two people I've worked with closely over the years. Thank you, Marcus and Iris, I appreciate you both.
Yesterday we gave some personal and professional advice to roughly 140 students at Georgia State University.
Our message can be summed up in four words
Professionalism
Alignment
Separation
Perspective
Professionalism - The most obvious point is to look and act the part. Be on time, dress appropriately, be curious about different things, and work hard. One of the not-so-obvious aspects of being professional is the importance of being able to deal with ideas and actions in life and the workplace that you might not agree with. Being able to adjust quickly while staying focused on the big picture is one of the talents of true professionals.
Alignment - Make sure your personal culture fits with the professional culture of the business or industry you are looking to work in. It's important to understand that policy and rule changes in business are a natural process and should be expected, but culture changes in business can mean the business itself has changed and that might result in a different business than what you initially signed up for.
Separation - It’s ok to be one of the thousands of pieces of a car. All of those pieces are required to ensure the vehicle operates properly. But if you want to be responsible for controlling the direction of that car, there is only one steering wheel. In business, find a good way to separate yourself from your peers.
Perspective -Take time to see things from a different vantage point. Understand how your appearance, actions, and words might affect someone's opinion of you. And how their affected opinion of you can be the difference between receiving an opportunity now or having to wait for another one to present itself.
Yesterday's presentation was a success considering it was the first day back for college students from spring break and 20-30 students lined up afterward to thank us, ask questions, and give us their contact information.
Special thanks to Dr. Diane Barbara for the invitation. It's hard to believe I've been giving talks to her college classes for 18 years now.
Have a Great Day and Stay Safe!
