Sometimes being lost is the only way we can find ourselves. I know it might sound counterintuitive, but hear my thoughts…
When you are certain about something it's easy to deem the small things unimportant. We tend to minimize things when we feel we are the experts. Think about it, when you are driving to a familiar place, do you feel the need to consult Apple or Google Maps? Do you call ahead to get directions or do you just go? Most of us just go because “We got this” or “We know what we're doing” or “I’ve done this so many times, I can do it in my sleep”. And that familiarity, which can be a blessing and make us extremely efficient, can also lead to a dulling of the senses. A slow drag into complacency.
Now, think about when you are lost and how all of your senses come alive. You become acutely aware of everything both external and internal. The state of being lost forces us to connect with our true selves and activates our survival genes. This altered state heightens our fears, our strengths, our insecurities, our biases, and any of the many emotions that become necessary for survival during times of uncertainty.
I know you might be thinking what the heck Vecus! What tangent are you talking about now? Instead of blaming my Gemini twin personality on this, I’ll give you some context. About a month ago I talked about a difficult work week I was having because of some hard decisions I was having to make in one of my operational markets. Well, I'm back in that market, and the progress that has been made by a few of the affected Managers is wonderful and impressive.
I analogized the progress made with being lost. After some difficult things that had to be done on my part, there was a period of uncertainty on their part, I liken the uncertainty to being lost. This uncertainty forced them to go internal and identify and work through some of their fears, complacencies, and insecurities and forced them to pay attention to the seemingly small insignificant things, which in reality, were the actual big and important things. I salute them for their progress.
Their tough experience of a month ago has resulted in some real development and progress today.
What's my takeaway from this experience? Don't be afraid of getting lost or being lost, if kept in proper perspective, it can be a powerful means for personal and professional development.
Stay safe and Have a Great Day!
