I had an interesting moment yesterday, it was about 3:15pm and I was driving in North Carolina. I had just come into the town of Courtland. As I came in I noticed a police truck facing me on the left-hand side of the road, as I passed he made a quick U-turn and got behind me. I had stopped at the red light waiting to make a left turn. Once the light turned green, his blue lights came on. All I could think of was thank goodness it's not 3:15am and I'm heading to the gym. The officer approached the vehicle, tagged the rear with his fingerprint, and asked me for my license and registration. I had already done the protocol I taught my son many years ago, turn down the radio, roll down the window, and place both hands on the top portion of the steering wheel. As I handed the officer my license I asked him the reason he stopped me, he said I was doing 51 in a 35 coming over the bridge I did not want to argue, but anyone who knows me knows I have a phobia of driving over bridges and never drive fast. I know I was going 40 because that is what the speed gauge said in the car. It also said the speed limit was 50, but I was not going to argue. I told the officer this was a rental and I had a virtual copy of the agreement on my phone. He made the off-comment that this was the nicest rental he had ever seen, he also said there should be a copy of the registration in the glove compartment. Before I moved, I asked him if it was ok to open the glove compartment to get the registration, and he indicated yes. While waiting 15 minutes for him to check my license, I texted my wife, told her I had been stopped, and made sure she could see my location. When the office came back he said he changed the ticket from speeding to failure to follow a lawfully erected sign. I shook my head internally and thought, you could not charge me for speeding because I was not, there was not clear visibility from the bridge to where he was sitting. Btw, I was not speeding. But I've been in these situations before, you see on the news all the time how these types of situations can go wrong so quickly. I simply said, do I need to show up in court or can I pay online? He said I could pay online. I said, “Thank you officer, and stay safe.”
My twin was pissed, but he is always pissed and angry its a battle at times keeping him in check, I told my wife I might need a drink, but no worries, I just took the next few hours looking at real estate sites and got to my hotel at 7:00pm. I thanked God for safe passage got dinner and went to sleep around 10:00pm. I woke up at 3:15am and unleashed my twin in the hotel gym, probably not the smartest thing to do 2 days before my Savage Race, but I refuse to hold on to anger and frustration, that's unhealthy and causes other issues.
Sometimes traveling is fun, other times it can be a test. Either way, I'm thankful that I arrived safe, I look forward to a productive day and I look forward to having a fun race on Saturday.
