I reminisce on the power of perspective…
I once thought I was Superman. I thought I was that cat who could beat anyone. When I was younger I was good with my hands and didn't mind getting hit, in other words, I could fight. I've always known, part of being good at fighting is being ok with taking one or two hits to give five or six. I would always let whoever I was fighting swing first, call it some sort of back in the day off-brand street code I had. I was in a lot of one-on-one fights, I never threw the first punch. I won most, but I got my butt beat a few times, I got jumped a few times, got kicked a few times, and got shot at a few times. I remember the time I was fighting this tall skinny kid named Danny. Danny was beating me down and then “IT” happened. This was the actual moment I knew I was not Superman. My big sister Nicole rolled up and whipped Danny’s Ass. That experience taught me a few things.
1- My sister was still “nicer” than me with her hands.
2- Up to that point, I had never lost any one-on-one fights. I realized after that, I could get hurt and possibly killed.
3- To never take anyone or any situation for granted.
This last point has saved my life many times over the years.
So what does all this reminiscing mean Vecus? Are you just reminiscing about the good old days when you were young and crazy or is there something else?
There is something else, this reminiscing is actually about perspective. I once had the perspective that I was invincible like superman and if I had kept that perspective, my life would look completely different today.
We carry our experiences with us, but we have a choice to make. Are those experiences going to weigh us down and we become its victim? Or are we going to learn from these experiences and use them as a reference point to do better things? The choice is ours…
Have a great Friday!
